Inside the De Niro Boot Factory: Why We Continue to Choose De Niro Riding Boots

For many years, travelling to Europe has been part and parcel of the Chaballo equestrian business. Germany has regularly been our destination point for conducting business, meeting suppliers, visiting trade fairs, building networks and developing meaningful relationships within the equestrian industry.

Earlier this year, after concluding business commitments in Germany, I travelled on to Italy to spend time with the team at De Niro Boot Co. I wanted to better understand the craftsmanship, production processes and people behind the boots we fit for our customers here in Australia.

As Chaballo’s business in tall riding boots has steadily grown over the years, so too has the responsibility that comes with fitting riders correctly and helping customers choose boots that genuinely meet their needs.

For some riders, fitting tall boots is straightforward. For others, it can be far more challenging. We regularly work with riders requiring solutions for narrow calves, wider feet, bunions, flat feet, previous injuries, nerve sensitivity and many other individual fitting considerations. Parents of young riders also face the challenge of balancing quality and cost while their teenagers are still growing.

One of the reasons we continue to work closely with De Niro is their remarkable ability to accommodate these fitting challenges through extensive sizing options, customisation and craftsmanship.

Over the years, De Niro has patiently answered what has felt like a never-ending stream of questions from me. Each discussion has contributed to an ever-growing knowledge base that ultimately helps us better assist our customers.

Arriving at the De Niro Factory in Italy

My friend and I were collected early in the morning and driven to the De Niro factory. During the journey, I couldn’t help but smile at the animated conversation and laughter between my Italian travel companion and the driver. The Italians truly do hospitality and enthusiasm like no other.

Upon arrival at the De Niro premises, we were welcomed into the boardroom and introduced to Filippo Donadeo, founder of De Niro Boot Co, his wife Irene, and members of their team.

Immediately, I was drawn to the large displays of leather surrounding the room. Featured amongst them were the latest “Festova” special leathers that had only recently been launched at Spoga in Cologne the week prior. Alongside these were rows of tall boots displayed in an array of styles, colours, textures and custom finishes.

Even before stepping onto the factory floor, the displays reflected exactly what De Niro has become known for internationally — creativity, craftsmanship and exceptional attention to detail.

Sharing Chaballo’s Australian Story

Before beginning the factory tour, I suggested giving a short informal presentation about Chaballo and the Australian equestrian market. The idea was met with genuine enthusiasm, and soon more staff joined us in the boardroom.

My travel companion sat alongside Filippo to assist with translation. Both Filippo and Irene were incredibly attentive throughout, clearly wanting to ensure that nothing meaningful was lost between languages.

That level of attentiveness and genuine interest would become a recurring theme throughout the day.

Understanding the Craftsmanship Behind De Niro Boots

Following the presentation, we began a personal guided tour of the warehouse and factory, which spans three substantial floors.

I learnt that De Niro was founded more than 35 years ago and now employs over 100 staff. I was particularly interested to meet team members who had worked alongside Filippo since the company’s earliest days. Having worked in both small entrepreneurial businesses and larger-scale manufacturing environments myself, I was fascinated not only by the production systems, but also by the people behind them.

Throughout the visit, I spent time with staff from research and development, design, production, sales, marketing, quality assurance and logistics.

One entire section of the warehouse housed aisle upon aisle of special leathers. The quantity and diversity were extraordinary. We stopped at one area where a selection of leathers was brought down for closer inspection. While I recognised some finishes from previous collections, many were completely new to me. The textures, colours and quality were exceptional and reinforced how extensive De Niro’s customisation capabilities truly are.

The experience also made me realise that I need to significantly expand my own leather sample collection for customers back home.

Precision and Attention to Detail

From the warehouse, we moved onto the factory floor where I observed various stages of the boot-making process.

One moment that particularly stayed with me was watching a worker wearing a headlamp carefully inspecting large sheets of brushed leather. Every tiny imperfection was identified and marked with meticulous precision. Even flaws that appeared almost invisible to my eye were rejected.

We then stopped beside a laser engraving machine where, to my surprise, my own name appeared on the screen. The machine uses precision laser technology to engrave initials and personalised details into leather. Until that moment, I had never really considered how those custom personalisations were achieved on customers’ boots.

Unfortunately, amidst the busyness of the day, we forgot to return and collect my personalised leather engraving — something I still regret!

Further along the factory floor, Irene guided me through long rows of workstations where different stages of production were taking place. I watched leather being shaped, heated, cooled and moulded, soles being attached and finishing details being completed.

With a simple nod from Irene, workers would proudly bring over their work to show me more closely. There was an unmistakable pride in craftsmanship throughout every stage of production.

The Artistry Behind Custom Riding Boots

While the advanced machinery was impressive, I was equally fascinated by the highly skilled hand-finished elements involved in creating custom riding boots.

At one workstation, I watched a craftsman using tweezers, a small burner and delicate tools to individually place crystals into the top design of a boot with incredible precision. There would have been hundreds of crystals involved in that single design alone.

Moments like these reinforced that De Niro boots are not simply mass-produced products. They are highly specialised pieces of craftsmanship that combine technical manufacturing with artistry.

Why Quality Assurance Matters

One of the most insightful aspects of the visit was learning more about De Niro’s quality assurance processes.

Quality control checks are integrated throughout multiple stages of production, followed by a final inspection before any boots leave the factory.

On the rare occasion that a pair of boots does not meet De Niro’s internal standards, the boots are rejected and remade before being sent to the customer. In fact, there have been instances over the years where I have been notified that a customer’s boots failed final quality assurance and would therefore be remade as a priority.

While delays are never ideal, seeing the level of scrutiny applied firsthand gave me an even greater appreciation for the company’s commitment to quality.

Why We Continue to Recommend De Niro Boots

By the end of the day, it was clear that De Niro Boot Co is built on far more than beautiful leather and elegant designs.

Behind every pair of boots is a combination of technical expertise, craftsmanship, innovation and genuine pride in workmanship.

For us at Chaballo, visiting the De Niro factory reinforced why we continue to recommend these boots to riders seeking quality, comfort, fit and long-term performance. Whether fitting a young rider purchasing their first competition boots or assisting someone with more complex fitting requirements, having confidence in the people and processes behind the product matters enormously.

Thank you to Filippo, Irene and the entire De Niro team for your generous hospitality and for sharing your knowledge so openly.

Until we meet again.
